This is no accident, nor is it luck: it's a matter of height, impact angle, and especially the material around the device.

The problem, when you buy a case for the design — and when you're looking for a SpongeBob case, you're primarily buying a design — is that you look at the illustration and not the material. The result: you pick a thin rigid case because the graffiti looks superb, you drop it on tiles, and you discover that the case survived perfectly while the screen took the full force of the shock wave. Soft, rigid, hybrid: what these words really mean

In retail, "soft" refers to two distinct materials that are often confused. Silicone (usually molded liquid silicone) is matte, slightly tacky to the touch, very pleasant in hand, but attracts dust and pocket lint. TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, is a flexible translucent or colored plastic: it's more slippery, even more elastic, and it's what you find in the vast majority of printed cases under €20.

TPU, the true market standard

A decent quality TPU is between 1.2 and 1.5 mm thick on the back and up to 2 mm on the edges. It bends without whitening, returns to its shape, and can be put on the phone without tools. Its hardness is measured in Shore A: around 85 to 95 Shore A for a phone case, which is roughly the flexibility of a sneaker sole. Below 80, the case becomes soft and deforms after a few months of going in and out of pockets.

Polycarbonate, the true hard case

Polycarbonate (PC) is a hard, originally transparent plastic that barely deforms. A rigid case is often 0.8 to 1.5 mm thick, making it thinner and lighter than an equivalent TPU. It makes a distinct sound when placed on a table, retains its sharp edges, and prints appear best on it. In return, what it doesn't absorb, it transmits.

Hybrid, the two-layer compromise

A hybrid case combines a soft TPU inner case with a rigid outer case, sometimes fused, sometimes separable. This is the format for "shockproof" or "armor" cases. It protects significantly better, but it adds 3 to 4 mm to the device's thickness and often weighs 45 to 60 g, compared to 15 to 25 g for a simple case. On a phone that already weighs 200 g, the difference is noticeable in your pocket.

Shock resistance: what each material can withstand

Physically, a fall is energy that needs to be dissipated in a few milliseconds. A soft material dissipates it by deforming: it converts the shock into heat and movement. A rigid material doesn't deform, so it transmits the energy to what's behind it — the chassis, then the screen.

Low drops, the ones that happen all the time

Between 30 cm and 1 m — the phone sliding off the couch, bed, coffee table — TPU clearly wins. The raised edges compress, the screen doesn't touch the ground, and nothing breaks. At these heights, a thin rigid case does barely better than no case at all if the fall is on an angle.

High drops, the ones that hurt

Beyond 1.20 m — pocket height, ear height — the situation changes. TPU alone reaches its limits: it deforms so much that it allows the chassis to hit the ground. This is where the hybrid takes the advantage, with its rigid layer distributing the impact over a larger surface before the TPU absorbs it.

The detail that changes everything: raised edges

Look at the case from the side, laid flat with the screen facing down. If there's at least 1 mm between the screen surface and the table, the screen is protected from flat drops. Around the cameras, you need 1.5 to 2 mm of elevation, because a scratched lens can't be repaired like a back glass. Scratches, yellowing, and aging

A case is not a permanent purchase. It ages, and each material ages in its own way.

Yellowing of translucent TPU

This is the most well-known flaw. Transparent or light-colored TPU yellows due to the combined effects of UV, heat, and skin oils. Expect 6 to 12 months for daily outdoor use, 12 to 18 months for someone who mostly stays indoors. The good news: on a case printed with a solid colored background, like most SpongeBob models, the phenomenon is invisible, as there's no transparent area to reveal it. This is a real argument in favor of full patterns.

Micro-scratches on polycarbonate

Glossy PC scratches quickly: keys, sand at the bottom of a beach bag, a pocket zipper. These scratches don't go through the print layer when it's protected by a varnish, but they dull the shine. A matte or soft-touch finish hides these micro-scratches much better than a glossy finish.

Mechanical fatigue

TPU loses its elasticity over repeated installation and removal cycles. If you change cases often — because you have multiple designs, which is common among collectors — each case lasts longer. If you keep the same one permanently, expect 12 to 24 months before the corners loosen. PC, on the other hand, never loosens: it breaks suddenly or not at all.

TPU yellowing is not dirt: it's a chemical reaction of the polymer itself, the oxidation of urethane bonds due to UV exposure. No cleaning will reverse it, and the baking soda or hydrogen peroxide recipes found online mostly lighten the surface for a few days. The only true remedy is preventive: an opaque printed design, or storage away from direct sunlight.

Real grip, thickness, and weight

Protection isn't the only criterion: a slippery case will cause more drops than it prevents.

Grip

Matte silicone is the grippiest material: it holds best in a dry or slightly damp hand. Smooth TPU is intermediate. Glossy polycarbonate is frankly slippery, especially on a slightly inclined table or a sofa armrest. If you have large hands and a large phone, grip matters more than durability.

Pocket thickness

A simple case adds 2 to 3 mm of total thickness, a hybrid adds 5 to 8 mm. On slim jeans, the difference is immediate. If your phone lives in a short pocket or a backpack, thickness matters less.

Wireless charging compatibility

A case less than 3 mm thick on the back allows induction charging without issues. Beyond that, charging slows down or disconnects. Hybrid cases with a decorative metal plate simply block induction: if you charge on a stand, check this point before anything else.
