Two t-shirts at the same price, with the same design, can have lifespans that vary from one to five times. One will have its design intact after three years; the other will show cracks after fifteen washes. The difference is not visible in the product photo, is almost never written in the technical sheet, yet it determines everything: it's the printing technique.
This opacity suits many. A seller who doesn't announce their technique has nothing to be accountable for. Yet, each process leaves very recognizable clues — a feel, an edge, a reflection — that can be read in ten seconds once you know what to look for. And knowing the technique means knowing exactly how to wash the item so it survives.

The four textile printing techniques
Screen printing
The oldest and most robust. A thick ink, usually plastisol, is pushed with a squeegee through a stretched mesh screen. One screen per color: this is why screen-printed visuals rarely have more than four or five colors, in solid, flat tones, without gradients. The ink is then polymerized in a drying tunnel at around 160 °C, which sets it permanently.
Result: a slightly raised deposit that you can feel with your finger, very saturated colors even on a black background, and durability of over a hundred washes when polymerization has been done correctly. Its drawback: it's only profitable in series, so it never applies to unique visuals.
DTG, direct-to-garment printing
An inkjet printer projects water-based ink directly into the cotton fibers. On dark textiles, a white underbase is applied first, after a liquid pretreatment that fixes the ink. This is the technique for gradients and photographic renderings.
To the touch, the design is almost imperceptible: the ink is in the fiber, not on it. It's pleasant, breathable, and perfect for a complex visual. However, colors are slightly less vibrant than in screen printing, and wash durability is a notch below, especially on dark backgrounds where the white underbase eventually becomes visible.
DTF transfer
The design is printed on a PET film, sprinkled with a thermoplastic adhesive powder, then pressed onto the garment at 150 to 165 °C for 10 to 15 seconds. This is the most industrially flexible process: it works on cotton, polyester, blends, light or dark, in small batches.
Its Achilles' heel is visible to the eye: the design forms a film placed on the fabric, with a clean edge and often a slight shiny halo around the design. It's this film that cracks when tumble-dried, and peels off at the corners if the press was too brief.
Sublimation
Heated to around 190 to 200 °C, the ink goes directly from solid to gaseous state and penetrates the polyester fibers, with which it chemically bonds. The design is no longer on the fabric: it is the fabric.
Direct consequence: no feel, no cracking possible, ever. Two absolute limitations, however. Sublimation works only on polyester or on a surface coated with a polymer resin, and only on light backgrounds, since the ink is translucent and cannot lighten a fabric. This is the technique for all full print models you find on t-shirts covered with designs right up to the seams.
Identifying the technique by sight and touch
The finger test
Run your fingertip over the edge of the design, with your eyes closed. A distinct, slightly rubbery relief: screen printing. A smooth film, slightly colder than the fabric: DTF transfer. Nothing at all, you can't feel where the design starts: DTG or sublimation.
The stretch test
Gently stretch the fabric where the design is. Screen printing stretches with the fabric and returns without a mark. The transfer whitens slightly at the fold and shows fine lines. Sublimation doesn't move, as there's nothing to stretch.
The grazing light test
Tilt the garment under a lamp. A shiny halo forming a rectangle or outline around the design indicates a transfer: it's the carrier film, slightly wider than the design. A design without any visible outline, where the fabric weave remains visible through the colors, indicates DTG or sublimation.
The fabric back test
Turn the garment inside out. In sublimation, the color often shows through slightly on the back because the ink has penetrated the fiber. In screen printing and transfer, the back remains perfectly blank. This is the most reliable of the four tests.

Why some designs only exist on white backgrounds
This is the question everyone eventually asks when browsing a catalog: why is this superb visual only offered in white or very light grey? The answer is chemical, not commercial.
Ink cannot lighten
In sublimation as in DTG without an underbase, the ink is translucent: it overlays the fabric color instead of masking it. A yellow printed on black results in a dirty brown, if it results in anything at all. The only solution on dark backgrounds is to add an opaque white layer underneath — which sublimation cannot do, and which costs an extra pass in DTG.
The dark background compromise
On a black sweatshirt, you therefore need either solid screen printing, a transfer, or DTG with an underbase. Each of these options has a cost or a constraint, which explains why visuals on dark backgrounds are often more graphic and less photographic than those on light backgrounds. Mugs, glasses, and water bottles: the case of rigid surfaces
Ceramic mug
Two schools of thought exist. Sublimation on polymer coating: the mug is pre-coated with a resin into which the ink penetrates during pressing. Photo-quality rendering, low cost, but the coating wears out with intensive dishwashing. Kiln-fired decal: the design is vitrified at high temperature, making it practically indelible and dishwasher-safe, at a much higher cost. Glass and plastic
Mainly pad printing — a silicone pad that deposits ink — or UV printing, where the ink is instantly cured by a lamp. UV printing produces vibrant colors and a slight relief; it fears scratches from a knife or hard brush, not water.
Stainless steel water bottles
On an insulated water bottle, the design is generally applied by UV printing or baked paint. It's solid, but always on the surface: that's why no decorated water bottle should go in the dishwasher, regardless of the manufacturer. The friction of the rack and the cycle temperature shorten the life of the design in a few dozen washes.

What makes a print last
The three actions that make all the difference
First step: wash inside out. The design no longer rubs against the drum or other clothes, and half of the mechanical wear disappears. Second step: 30 °C maximum, short cycle. Third step: no tumble drying. The circulating heat softens and then cracks the inks applied to the surface, including screen printing.
What to avoid
Fabric softener leaves a greasy film that seeps under the edges of a transfer. Bleach and chlorinated stain removers attack pigments. Ironing directly on the design will melt it in a few seconds: always iron inside out, or place a cotton cloth in between.
The first wash
Wait at least 24 hours after reception before washing a transfer-printed item for the first time. The hot-melt adhesive continues to stabilize after pressing, and immediate washing of a recently produced item weakens the edges. 🧠 Tip
If a transfer starts to lift at a corner, you can often save it: place a clean cotton cloth over the design, iron at medium temperature, without steam, pressing firmly for 10 to 15 seconds, then let it cool completely without touching. The adhesive will remelt and re-stick. Never do this on thick screen printing: it would melt.
Defects to check upon receipt
On textile
First, look at the edges of the design: they should be clean, without smudges or misalignment between colors. A slight contour misalignment indicates poor screen registration in screen printing. Then, check for any sticky areas, a sign of incomplete polymerization: this ink will come off with the first wash.
On dark backgrounds
Look for the white undercoat that might extend beyond the design. A half-millimeter white border around the design is a printing defect, not a graphic choice. It is most visible in daylight.
On rigid supports
Run your fingernail over the edge of the design on a mug or water bottle. If you feel a distinct ridge or if your nail catches, the print is simply applied and will come off quickly. Also check for the absence of bubbles under the varnish.
What to do in case of a defect
Take a photo in natural light, front and angled, before any washing. A printing defect noticed upon receipt is much easier to deal with than a degraded design after ten cycles — in the latter case, no one can distinguish the defect from normal wear. ⚠️ Mistake to avoid
Never put a printed garment in the dryer on a hot cycle, not even once, not even "to help out." A DTF transfer loses its adhesion from the first high-temperature pass, and the micro-cracks that will appear three washes later come from that cycle. If you're in a hurry, spin at reduced speed and hang on a hanger: two hours are enough for a t-shirt.
