⚡ The short answer
A clear phone case yellows because TPU reacts to UV rays and heat: its polyether chains oxidize and turn amber. This is irreversible. No cleaning method can restore the original transparency, but you can slow down the phenomenon by several months.
For regular cleaning: lukewarm water at 30°C, mild soap, soft toothbrush, complete drying for 2 hours. Once a month is sufficient for a case used daily, and once every two weeks if you handle it a lot.
Absolutely do not use the following on a printed case: 90° alcohol, acetone, bleach, whitening toothpaste, and disinfectant wipes. These five products will attack the printing varnish in just a few uses, leaving a faded, rough pattern.

A phone case spends about sixteen hours a day in your hand, pocket, or bag. It is, by far, the most handled everyday object after the phone itself. And yet, no one washes it. We keep it until it becomes sticky around the edges, gray in the corners, and vaguely amber on the back, then we replace it, telling ourselves that the quality wasn't up to par.
The truth is more nuanced. Part of the aging is chemical and inevitable: TPU, the flexible and transparent plastic that makes up most cases, yellows under the effect of ultraviolet rays. Another part is simply accumulated dirt — sebum, pocket lint, sunscreen residue — and that can be removed in ten minutes with lukewarm water.
This article separates the two. You'll learn what can be cleaned, what cannot be recovered, and most importantly, which household products will destroy a print in three passes. If you're still hesitating about which type of case to choose, our soft or hard case comparison and the compatibility by phone model page complement this information.
Why do phone cases yellow?
Three mechanisms combine, and they don't have the same remedies.
Photo-oxidation of TPU
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) owes its flexibility to flexible polyether segments. These segments are sensitive to ultraviolet light: when exposed to light, they oxidize and form colored compounds that absorb blue, thus appearing yellow. The phenomenon starts within the first few weeks and becomes visible in 4 to 8 months on a case exposed to the sun, compared to 12 to 18 months on a case that mostly stays in a pocket.
This is a chemical transformation of the material itself, not a surface deposit. No product can reverse it: tutorials that promise to "re-whiten" a case with hydrogen peroxide only further attack the polymer.
Heat
Heat accelerates all oxidation reactions. A case that spends the summer on a dashboard, where temperatures easily exceed 60°C, yellows two to three times faster than a case kept at room temperature. Wireless charging, which heats the back of the phone to 40-45°C, also plays a role, but more moderately.
Sebum and residues
The skin continuously produces sebum. This oily film traps dust, clothing fibers, and micro-particles, forming a gray-brown deposit that accumulates primarily in the corners and around cutouts. Unlike the first two mechanisms, this one can be completely cleaned. It is often this, and not oxidation, that gives the impression that a case has "aged" after three months.
💡 Did you know?
High-quality clear cases contain UV absorbers and antioxidants added to the material. These additives are consumed as they work: they delay yellowing but do not prevent it indefinitely. This is why a clear case always eventually turns amber, while a colored or printed case retains its original appearance much longer — the pigment simply masks the phenomenon.
How often should you clean it?
There's no universal rule, but three rhythms cover almost all uses:
- Once a month for classic use: phone in pocket or bag, clean hands most of the time.
- Every two weeks if you handle your phone while eating, if you exercise with it, or if you regularly apply hand cream.
- Every week in summer, when sweat and sunscreen significantly accelerate grime buildup.
The most reliable signal is not visual but tactile: as soon as the edges become slightly sticky, the sebum film is saturated. That's the time.

The cleaning method, step by step
Allow ten minutes for handling and two hours for drying. Never put a wet case back on a phone: moisture trapped between the two can cause corrosion of contacts and whitish marks.
1. Remove and inspect
Remove the case from your phone. Look inside: this is almost always where the deposit concentrates, mixed with micro-grains of sand that scratch the back of the phone. Tap the case against your hand to dislodge the larger debris.
2. Lukewarm soapy water bath
Fill a bowl with water at approximately 30°C — lukewarm to the touch, never hot — with two drops of dish soap or liquid Marseille soap. Let it soak for five minutes. The surfactant dissolves the greasy film without damaging the print varnish.
3. Brush gently
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, never an abrasive sponge. Focus on the corners, around the cutouts, and the inside. On the printed side, brush in one direction only, without pressing: the design is protected by a thin varnish of a few microns.
4. Rinse and dry completely
Rinse with clear water, dab with a microfiber cloth, then let air dry for two hours, in the shade and never on a radiator. Heat drying can deform the TPU and accelerate yellowing.
Cleaning based on material: silicone, TPU, rigid
Soft silicone
Silicone attracts dust by static electricity and traps pocket lint. After washing, run a piece of adhesive tape over the entire surface: it removes fibers that water leaves behind. Silicone tolerates soapy water well and doesn't need anything more.
Clear TPU
Follow the same procedure, with an additional precaution: avoid any alcohol-based products, which can make TPU cloudy and brittle. If black stains persist in the corners, a paste of baking soda and water applied for one minute and then rinsed will remove them without scratching.
Rigid polycarbonate case
The easiest to maintain. It barely yellows, doesn't get sticky, and only needs a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Its weakness is elsewhere: it cracks on impact instead of absorbing it, as explained in our soft or rigid comparison.
Earbud case
Earbud cases live at the bottom of bags, thus in dust. Remove the case, clean it like a phone case, and wipe the charging case itself with a dry cotton swab — never use a wet one near the charging contacts. Details in our guide to SpongeBob AirPods cases.
The five products you should never use
- 90° alcohol and hand sanitizer: dissolve the printing varnish and make TPU cloudy in a few passes.
- Acetone (nail polish remover): directly attacks the plastic. A single application is enough to permanently soften the surface.
- Bleach: discolors the pattern and weakens the polymer, which becomes brittle at the edges.
- Whitening toothpaste: this is an abrasive. It polishes the varnish, leaving an uneven satin appearance and permanently dulling the print.
- Disinfectant wipes: most contain alcohol or quaternary ammoniums, with the same effects as the first point.
⚠️ Mistake to avoid
Never put a phone case in the dishwasher, even on the top rack. Cycles reach 55-65°C with very alkaline detergents: the TPU deforms, the cutouts no longer align with the buttons, and the print comes off in patches. This is the most common accident, and it is irreversible.

How to slow down yellowing
You can't cancel it, but you can delay it. Four actions are enough to gain several months.
Limit direct sun exposure
Don't leave your phone face down on a patio table or a dashboard. These are the two situations where the back of the case gets the maximum UV and heat at the same time.
Clean regularly
Accumulated sebum is not neutral: it contains fatty acids that accelerate the degradation of the polymer surface. A case cleaned monthly ages visibly slower than a case never washed.
Avoid overheating
Remove the case during a long wireless charging session or intensive gaming. A few degrees less over hundreds of cumulative hours makes a real difference.
Choose a printed model instead of a transparent one
This is the most effective tip. A colored background or a dense pattern completely hides the yellowing of the support. A printed SpongeBob case will retain its original appearance much longer than a transparent case, even with the same material.
🧠 Tip
Keep a second case in rotation. Two cases alternated monthly do not last twice as long; they last significantly longer: each spends half the time away from light and sebum, and you always have a perfectly dry case on hand for cleaning day. At €17.90 for the entry model, this option is cheaper than an early replacement.
Summary table
| Material | Yellowing | Cleaning | Frequency | To avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent TPU | Strong, from 4-8 months | Lukewarm water + mild soap | Monthly | Alcohol, acetone |
| Printed TPU | Hidden by the pattern | Soft brush, one direction only | Monthly | Abrasives, wipes |
| Soft silicone | Low, but gets dirty quickly | Soap + adhesive tape | Bi-monthly | Bleach |
| Rigid polycarbonate | Very low | Damp microfiber cloth | Quarterly | Acetone |
| Earbud case | Variable | Soap, dry for 2 hours | Monthly | Water near contacts |
When should you replace your case?
A phone case is not just a decorative item: it's a shock-absorbing component. It should be replaced as soon as it no longer performs its function, and three signs are unmistakable.
The edges have lost their bounce
Press on a corner and release. If the material takes a second to regain its shape instead of springing back instantly, the polymer has hardened. It will no longer properly dissipate the energy from a fall.
It has already absorbed a major fall
A soft case absorbs a shock by deforming, sometimes invisibly. After a severe corner fall, consider it worn out, even if it appears intact.
The pattern is cracked
A peeling print leaves the plastic exposed, more vulnerable to UV rays. At this stage, it's also an opportunity to change your style: the shop offers over fifty designs, from Patrick for iPhone to graffiti and secondary characters from Bikini Bottom.
Delivery and lead times
Delivery is €5.90 in France and the European Union, free for purchases over €60, and €7 outside the European Union. Please allow 7 to 14 business days for receipt.
Since a single case costs between €17.90 and €27.90, it is often wise to order it with a keychain, a wallet, or a mouse pad to reach the free shipping threshold. Our article on mistakes to avoid when buying online details this calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my transparent case yellow?
Because the TPU it's made of oxidizes under the effect of UV rays and heat. Its flexible segments form colored compounds that turn amber. The phenomenon becomes visible in 4 to 8 months of sun exposure, 12 to 18 months in pocket use.
Can a transparent case be made transparent again?
No. Yellowing is a chemical transformation of the plastic itself, not a surface deposit. Methods using hydrogen peroxide or toothpaste only further attack the material. Only replacement solves the problem.
How to clean a printed case without damaging the pattern?
Soak in lukewarm water at 30°C with two drops of dish soap for five minutes, then gently brush with a soft toothbrush in one direction only. Rinse with clear water and air dry for two hours.
Can hydroalcoholic gel be used on a case?
No, especially not on a printed case. Alcohol dissolves the protective varnish of the pattern and makes the TPU cloudy then brittle. Mild soap degreases just as well without any of these effects.
How often should a phone case be cleaned?
Once a month for regular use, every two weeks if you handle your phone a lot, every week in summer. The real signal is tactile: as soon as the edges become sticky, it's time.
Does a silicone case also yellow?
Much less than transparent TPU. Silicone is chemically more stable against UV rays. Its flaw lies elsewhere: it strongly attracts dust and clothing fibers due to static electricity.
Can a phone case be washed in a dishwasher?
Never. Cycles reach 55 to 65°C with very alkaline detergents: the TPU deforms, the cutouts shift relative to the buttons, and the print flakes off in patches.
When should you change your phone case?
As soon as the edges no longer return instantly to place after pressure, after a severe corner fall, or when the pattern starts to peel. A hardened case no longer really protects.
A well-maintained case can easily last two years before its protection truly degrades. Ten minutes a month, lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft brush: that's all there is to it. The rest comes down to the initial choice—a printed model rather than a transparent one, a material suited to your use—and there, the collection of cases offers plenty to choose from.
