SpongeBob Shower Curtain: Which Material to Choose?

A shower curtain is one of the few items in the house that we look at every day without ever thinking about it — until the morning we notice the small black dots at the bottom of the hem. At this point, most people throw it away and buy an identical one, which will mold in exactly the same way six months later. The problem wasn't the curtain.

It boils down to two things: the material chosen initially, and what is done with it every evening. A well-maintained €20 PEVA curtain lasts longer than a high-end polyester one left folded against the wall. And a washable polyester curtain, if machine washed every two months, lasts three to five years without ever smelling musty.

PEVA, EVA, polyester: what really separates them

Three acronyms appear on labels, and they don't mean the same thing at all. Here's what you need to remember before buying.

PEVA, the current standard

Polyethylene-vinyl acetate. It's a flexible plastic, inherently waterproof, and most importantly, chlorine-free — unlike PVC, which it has largely replaced in the European market. It doesn't emit the aggressive characteristic odor of vinyl, requires no lining, and is inexpensive. Its drawback: it splits at the eyelets after one or two years of daily use, especially if the curtain is pulled abruptly.

EVA, more flexible

Same family, without the polyethylene. Softer to the touch, it drapes better and makes less plastic bag noise when moved. It's also a little more fragile. On decorated models, printing is often done on the inner side, which protects it from abrasion.

Woven polyester, the most durable

A textile, not a plastic. It is water-repellent rather than waterproof: water beads on the surface instead of passing through, but some eventually settles. Major advantage: it's machine washable at 30°C, dries quickly, and withstands dozens of washes. The common weight is around 100 g/m²; below that, the curtain sticks to the legs in the shower. This is the material of our most expensive models, and by far the best over five years. The reasoning is the same as for our clothing materials: woven polyester can handle washing.

Waterproofing, lining, and inner curtain

This is the most confusing point: a fabric curtain, even water-repellent, lets in some moisture. Is a liner necessary?

When a liner is essential

If your shower is walk-in, without a raised tray, or if the curtain is the only barrier to the rest of the room, add a transparent PEVA inner curtain behind the decorated one. It costs a few euros, needs changing annually, and protects the decorative curtain from any direct contact with water. This setup significantly extends the lifespan of a printed design.

When it's unnecessary

Bathtub with a high rim, curtain falling inside the tub, proper ventilation: a single PEVA curtain is largely sufficient. Adding a liner simply doubles the surface to dry, thus increasing the risk of mold.

The right way, in both cases

The curtain should fall inside the shower tray, never outside. This seems obvious, yet it's the most common mistake: a curtain placed on the edge allows water to run onto the floor, damages the sealant, and eventually attacks the mat placed in front.

Dimensions, eyelets, and shower rod

Three figures are enough, and they prevent 90% of unpleasant surprises upon delivery.

The standard size

180 × 180 cm covers almost all French bathtubs and shower trays. For a corner bathtub or a large shower, it goes up to 180 × 200 cm in height, or 200 × 200 cm if the rod is more than 1.80 m. Always measure the rod, not the bathtub: it's the width of the rod that determines the usable width of the curtain, with 20 to 30 cm margin for fabric undulation.

The eyelets

Twelve eyelets is the standard for a 180 cm wide curtain, roughly one every 15 cm. Below ten, the curtain sags between the rings and water seeps through. Metal eyelets are more resistant than eyelets simply cut into the plastic, but they can leave a rust stain on a light-colored curtain if they are of poor quality.

The rod

The common diameter is 25 mm; standard eyelets are 3 cm in inner diameter and therefore fit without force. If you use a tension shower rod, check that it is perfectly horizontal: a slightly tilted rod will cause all rings to slide to the same side within a week.

Mold: where it comes from and how to avoid it

This is the number one reason for replacing a shower curtain. Three simple steps are enough to postpone the inevitable for several years.

Always spread it out

After showering, pull the curtain across the entire width of the rod instead of leaving it folded in a corner. A spread-out curtain dries two to three times faster: the folds retain water by capillarity, and that's exactly where black spots appear first.

Rinse the bottom

The bottom hem receives everything: soapy water running down, shampoo splashes, limescale residue. Ten seconds of shower spray on it, once a week, is enough to prevent film from forming.

Ventilate

Ten to fifteen minutes of an open window or a CMV (controlled mechanical ventilation) after each shower lowers the humidity below the threshold where mold develops. Without ventilation, no amount of curtain maintenance will suffice — and the problem will also be visible on the joints and ceiling.

Washing your curtain without damaging the print

The procedure depends entirely on the material, and a mistake here can ruin the pattern.

Polyester: machine wash at 30°C

Delicate cycle, 30°C, reduced amount of liquid detergent, spin speed limited to 400-600 rpm. Add two towels to the drum: they gently rub the surface and prevent the curtain from balling up. Above all, no tumble dryer: heat destroys the water-repellent treatment and cracks the print. Rehang it damp on its rod; it will finish drying without a crease. PEVA and EVA: hand wash

These materials don't like the drum, which permanently marks creases. Use a soft sponge, lukewarm soapy water, a little baking soda on stained areas, and rinse with a shower spray while the curtain is hanging. It takes five minutes, once a month.

What you should never do

No bleach on color prints: it discolors vivid areas, and yellow is the first to go. Also, no hard brushes, which irreversibly scratch PEVA and create micro-scratches where dirt clings even faster.

Limescale, water marks, and new smell

Three distinct nuisances, three different solutions.

Limescale

The white streaks at the bottom of the curtain are limescale, not dirt. Spray pure white vinegar, let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For a polyester curtain, half a glass of white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser does the same job when washing.

Water marks on dark patterns

These are most visible on dark blue backgrounds. A damp microfiber cloth wiped vertically, from top to bottom, makes them disappear without leaving halos — circular movements, however, create new ones.

The smell of newness

A new plastic curtain smells, which is normal: these are volatile compounds trapped during factory folding. Unfold it and let it air out overnight on a balcony or in a well-ventilated room before installing it; the smell will completely disappear. This is also a good opportunity to smooth out any transport creases.

Lifespan and signs that it needs changing

A curtain doesn't die suddenly. It gives three signals, in this order.

Tearing eyelets

On PEVA, this is the first breaking point. A tear at the top can be temporarily repaired with an adhesive reinforcement eyelet, sold in hardware stores. Two or three split eyelets, however, signal the end: the weight shifts to neighboring ones and the line gives way in cascade.

The persistent gray film

When a full wash does not restore the original color, the soap film has penetrated the material. This is irreversible on PEVA; on polyester, a wash at 40°C with sodium percarbonate often saves the situation one last time.

The odor returns within 48 hours

If the curtain smells musty two days after washing, it's not the curtain that needs attention, but the room's ventilation. Changing the curtain will not solve anything.

Matching it to the rest of the bathroom

A curtain occupies a large vertical surface: it's the piece of fabric that sets the tone for the entire bathroom. Two approaches work.

The curtain as a focal point

Busy pattern on the curtain, everything else solid. Yellow or pale blue towels, neutral rug, no other prints. This is the easiest option to succeed with, and the one that ages best. Our bath towels are well-suited to this supporting role.

The matching set

Same family of patterns on the curtain and towels, with different scales: a large face on the curtain, a small embroidered logo on the towels. This is more difficult to balance but more refined. The same logic as explained in apartment decoration for adults.

What if the bathroom is small?

Choose a light-colored background pattern. A navy blue curtain in a 3 m² bathroom visually eats up half the room. Our Rainbow and Flower Power models, on a light background, are the best fit for small spaces — the same reasoning as for a student room.
